The old is new again

You may have noticed that SUBStitution has a new look. We've had some welcome compliments on our website, e-mail signature and stationery, but few people know that the logo at the heart of the new design is 25 years old.

The logo was designed in 1984 by the 'press boys' at the Shepparton News as a farewell present when Anne Burgi left to set up SUBStitution as a locum service for regional newspapers.

The typeface, Korinna, is German jugendstil (Art Nouveau) serif type, first released by the H. Berthold AG type foundry in 1904. A revival was designed in 1974 by Ed Benguiat and Vic Caruso for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). Their version provided an increased x-height and multiple weights.

Korinna was a famous female poet who lived in Greece in the 6th century BC.
